I support Indigenous Nations in advancing their objectives and self-determination through engagement with public governments, proponents and the courts. I’m a fierce advocate for our clients, working to advance their objectives and rights through every available forum, from the boardroom to the courtroom.
I help clients identify the obstacles on their path to self-determination and self-governance, and I work alongside them to create strategies and opportunities for a better future.
I’ve worked on modern treaty negotiation and implementation, as well as legislative co-development and land use planning. I’ve also helped to secure complex agreements with proponents, including agreements designed to protect First Nations’ free, prior and informed consent before pursuing development activity on their lands. And I’ve assisted First Nations in developing their own laws and policies, based on traditional values and practices, to manage their lands and futures.
As a litigator, I’ve worked on matters involving the interpretation of core promises and principles of modern treaties. I’ve also supported Elders and leaders of the Nations I represent to ensure the courts understood the golden threads underpinning treaties.
My passion for this work stems from two decades of advocacy for the Tamil Nation, including as the founding director of a not-for-profit human rights organization. I draw on this energy and experience to enrich the strategic advice I provide to clients. I care deeply about and for the Indigenous Nations I work with, and I consider it a great privilege and responsibility to fight alongside them and support their self-governance.
