Senior Counsel
I’ve worked with Indigenous governments across Canada and participated in significant agreements between Indigenous communities and provincial and federal governments. The government-to-government negotiations I’ve helped to advance have focused particularly on the development of nuclear facilities, transmission lines and renewable energy projects, as well as environmental matters. I’ve also shaped proactive strategies for engaging both proponents and governments in mining and resource development.
I have extensive experience in community-focused consultation and accommodation, including the development and implementation of processes for free, prior and informed consent. I’ve also helped clients negotiate and implement land claim and self-government agreements, and I’ve participated in successful impact benefit negotiations.
I served as Chief of the Saugeen First Nation for four consecutive terms from 2006 to 2014. In this role, I dedicated a great deal of time to reconciliation of the Crown-First Nation relationship, as well as full recognition, protection and expression of Indigenous and treaty rights. I have deep experience in strategic development and diverse governance issues, including the crafting and adoption of laws, policies and processes. I’ve also played key roles on significant regional and national bodies, including tasks forces on consultation and accommodation, justice, environment and treaties.
I’m regularly invited to speak at conferences and law schools on Indigenous legal and political issues.
