For nearly two decades, I’ve represented Indigenous governments across Canada in their most important legal battles and negotiations. My practice is grounded in my belief that the law must be used not only to protect the rights of Indigenous peoples, but to expand them. I measure success by the real and lasting changes our clients achieve: land returned, rights recognized, governments strengthened and communities resourced to build promising futures on their terms.

As a litigator, I’ve appeared before the Supreme Court of Canada on multiple occasions, representing intervenors in a wide range of cases, including Behn, Keewatin (Grassy Narrows), Chippewas of the Thames and Re an Act Respecting First Nations, Inuit and Métis children, youth and families. I’ve litigated trials, judicial reviews, injunctions and other matters at all levels of court in Ontario, across Western Canada and in the Northwest Territories and Yukon. Recent litigation successes include Chippewas of Saugeen First Nation v South Bruce Peninsula, which confirmed First Nation ownership of Sauble Beach, and First Nation of Na-Cho Nyäk Dun v Yukon, which secured a landmark interpretation of Crown obligations under a Yukon modern treaty. In all of my cases, success came only through working hand in hand with my clients to find a strategy that would move the law in new and innovative directions.

Beyond the courtroom, I negotiate complex agreements with governments and industry that deliver meaningful outcomes: recognition of jurisdiction, sustainable wealth generation, and the creation of legal and financial tools that Nations need to govern their traditional territories effectively. My negotiation experience spans modern treaty negotiation, impact benefits agreements, legislative co-development and rights recognition agreements. I also work regularly with clients across the country on governance matters, including modern treaty implementation, land use planning and the development of First Nations’ own laws and policies.

I’m proud to be part of a firm that has shaped Indigenous rights law in Canada for more than 45 years. Whether helping our clients protect their lands and waters, reclaim territory, defend treaty rights or secure the resources needed for strong governance, my focus, like theirs, is always on the long term – ensuring that today’s legal strategies build a solid foundation for tomorrow’s self-government and prosperity.
